Very mysterious. The only Barrow Scaifes I am aware of are Thomas Scaife and Sarah Robinson who married in 1860 in Appleby and had some children in Barrow. Thomas was the son of Frances Scaife born 1809 Swindale, Shap. Thomas himself was born 1838, also Shap. Could this John have been a brother of Thomas? His lack of appearances in 1871 censuses and previous doesn't help me confirm my theory though.
